10. The Ancient Fat Defender – Cissus Quadrangularis
This is a supplement that isn’t discussed as much as PAGG, however it is mentioned in the ‘Damage Control‘ section of the book.
It is the supplement Tim used whilst he visited China, and ate loads of rice, while maintaining a low body fat percentage. There isn’t a lot of research from different labs, however preliminary studies suggest that this supplement can do a lot towards inhibiting fat gain.

My husband and I are going on cruise in Jan. 2013 and wanted to be off the diet during that time (it’s a cruise, how can we not?!?) Taking a read again through the book I thought that taking CQ would be the best option to combat the fat gain. If i understand correctly, we should take this during our “off week” for the cruise? Do we do it combination with the damage control chapter? Thanks for your help!
Hey Diana,
You’re correct – CQ is what Tim took while on a trip to Asia. You would take this for that week. If you have the option to, you could include a couple of weights workouts, and/or some shorter intense cardio while on the cruise. It’s up to you. If you did that, and kept your carbs to a minimum, except in the evenings, you’d probably come home in the same shape as which you left, just more relaxed!
Enjoy,
Luke
hello,
I’m wondering weather I should take the Cissus Quadrangularis the day after or on the day of my cheat day- would that ‘lessen’ the damage of the cheat day?- if so, what is the dosage?
Also I have not started the diet yet as I have a couple of questions:
is it better to lose weight on this diet with out exercise?
To make sure the effects of the cheat day aren’t significant- should I exercise on the day or the day after?
what single supplement could I take to stimulate weight loss on this diet? (not being PAGG, just a single tablet)
If I was to not do the resistance exercises and just cardio- would I lose muscle?
lastly, when during the week should I record my weight?
Hi Natalie,
Thanks for your questions.
You would take CQ on cheat day for best results. Follow the dosage noted in the book.
You can lose with or without exercise, but my suggestion is to use 2 or 3 intense but short exercise sessions each week. This will help preserve muscle and develop new muscle. Without exercise, you will lose some muscle mass, which generally isn’t advisable for most people (as most people are already carrying a bit less muscle than ideal).
Exercise on cheat day to minimize the effects. Again, as above – a heavy weight lifting sessions, or a 20 min interval training workout would be perfect.
Your question of a supplement to take is a tricky one. You’re obviously looking for a straightforward answer – none. There isn’t a supplement that can do this in one tablet, as most require continual dosage to remain active in the body. As a precursor to good health, which helps fat loss, I suggest a multivitamin, and 3000-50000mg of fish oil daily.
If you only did cardio, and you were losing weight, yes you will lose muscle. Cardio alone is a poor option for training. The only exemption to this is if you are using cardio type activities to do short (15-20 min), and intense interval workouts.
Most people find recording their weight the morning of cheat day works best.
All the best with it!!
